About G/T in Texas
Supporting gifted and talented (G/T) students begins with understanding who they are, how they are identified, and how schools are required to meet their needs. Giftedness can look different for every child—some excel academically, others show creative, artistic, or leadership strengths.
In Texas, G/T services are guided by state law, rule, and the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students (State Plan) to ensure students receive appropriate opportunities to learn, grow, and be challenged. This includes identifying students through a thoughtful process, designing instruction that matches their abilities, and fostering their intellectual and emotional development.
Families play an essential role in this journey. By learning about giftedness, understanding how identification works, and knowing what services and expectations exist, parents can better advocate for their child and partner with schools to support their success. Each school district is required to provide G/T services throughout the school day for the entire school year.
